Episode 6 Review: Heard It Through the Grapevine (2015)
And by the end of the 6th episode, Heard It Through the Grapevine managed to achieve its highest ratings so far, a straight 9%, one point below double digit ratings. Starting from the next week, i really do hope it reaches double digit ratings simply because it deserves it by having already established its very own ambiance by now. Once again, we have to deal with an episode that divides itself in two parts. During the first half we bear witness of various events, but also there’s an overall preparation that leads towards the second half, the meeting between In Sang and Seo Bom’s parents at the vast territory of the ever-shining household. Attorney Han didn’t feel at ease after the marriage license, the official announcement of the young couple and the presence of young master Jin Young in their lives. The cogwheels of a new master plan had already shown their contours during the 5th episode, by the first half of the 6th one things become more apparent and during the second half attorney Han and madame Choi strike with full force, step by step and methodically. It’s a well-crafted plan, but the household feels like a minefield with In Sang being the hidden button bound to detonate each and every mine regardless of casualties on both sides!
In Sang progresses as a character and as his father’s son, there are no middle ground solutions, discussion won’t solve anything because the answer will be pretty much a definitive X or O. If the father stands on one edge then In Sang has to be radical and stand on the other edge in order to achieve something and protect his wife, his son and his in-laws. His personal respect towards Seo Bom’s father, mother and sister is not enough for him, he wants attorney Han and madame Choi to apologize and if they don’t want to he will have to force them by strengthening his opposition. One may refer to him as a rebellious yet righteous son, some others can call him a boy that matured gradually in systematic blinks of an eye. The truth lies somewhere in the middle, the more he rebels, the more mature he becomes and the more mature he becomes, the more concrete his acts of rebellion seem to be at the same time. He’s not alone in this progress, Seo Bom sets his spirit aflame, not only with love, but also with her thoughts and the feeling of injustice on her rights as a woman, a wife, a sister, a mother and a daughter. Every time she realizes that something’s not right, in one hand she has her own way of mentioning it to In Sang, on the other Hand she tries to slightly restrain him from proceeding with an exaggerating plan because it could have the opposite outcome from the one both of them desire. Her emotional outbursts point towards In Sang’s second direction, the more he cherishes her fragile side and the more he witnesses his parents’ unjust and forceful views the more rioting he becomes because he knows the only way out is by going against his parents’ plans; if he won’t do it, then nobody can.
Divide and conquer actually never ended, it still marches on as a procedure, with more silent and hideous footsteps this time. Seo Bom can’t see Jin Young any time she wants to, the only moments she’ll be able to be with him are while breastfeeding him. It’s something that makes her feel like a third category nanny in the role of milk delivery service. She can see her own son simply because she can breastfeed him and it’s the best for the baby, a necessary evil whose intentions are pure. That’s how Seo Bom looks like, she sees her son only because her milk is the best for Jin Young and his immune system and this breaks her on the inside. Attorney Han and madame Choi steadily start showing their fangs anew. As for madame Choi, see probably feels like a mother for the first time, since the nanny took care of her two children while they were still babies, meeting Jin Young is a brand new experience and she’s not willing to surrender to… his real mother. We have a grandmother in the role of a mother as a stepmother and a mother in the role of a house arrest milking cow; sinister!
As for Seo Bom’s humble house, her family has turned it into a Jin Young temple where they can express their worship and adoration towards Seo Bom’s son, even if they haven’t met him yet. There are pictures of him and his parents everywhere and a special collage is the utmost faith material of this newly found religion! Jin Young is a brand new deity and you can sense it in Jin Ae ahjumma, Hyeong Shik ahjussi and Noo Ri’s bright and drunk with affection faces!
The almighty household’s family sets the rules of the game, they intend to meet Seo Bom’s parents. Not because they suddenly felt emotional and felt the urge to meet their in-laws, there’s a plan lurking in the shadows waiting for the right time to make its appearance in a secure environment that is no other but the household itself. They are pretty much aware that Seo Bom’s parents want to meet them, but also see their daughter again and their grandson for the first time. Calling them over feels like they’re doing them a favor and this vibe strengthens their plan, step by step, without rushing it. Of course, madame Choi would never want to call Jin Ae ahjumma who already feels bad for her behavior at the household during the memorandum era and secretary Lee’s the one that unveils the meeting details, if it’s breakfast on Monday then it’s breakfast on Monday since it feels like a once in a lifetime experience.
Behavior lessons and pacing with the family’s flow are what madame Choi holds for Seo Bom and In Sang once they show their intentions to be able to see their son more often. The only respectable opinion in the household is the one attorney Han and madame Choi present, the rest simply have to follow. The climate for Seo Bom’s parents’ arrival is being set methodically. Using the underage card and the fact that none of them earns money has its own effect for the time being. Being thankful and disappointed at the same time makes perfect sense when it comes to Seo Bom’s feelings because single mothers at that age have to face many difficulties in order to raise their own babies, the thing is, even if her baby is growing up day by day really well, she doesn’t partake in the magic of watching her own son growing up by her side. It’s a two-edged knife situation. The more the time passes, the more In Sang’s rage for the current situation is growing! But it’s time to enter the study room once again, yes, the one with the electronic password lock! Haha, the way he left Seo Bom’s room was like a little spoiled kiddo when his parents hid his favorite toy! In Sang’s boiling on the inside and he tries to find possible solutions to their problem and as an underage parent he wonders whether he could file a custody suit or not, but the jeet kune do photographic memory teacher gives him all the necessary reasons why his parents would win over a possible custody suit and the studying begins anew!
Madame Choi’s spending some time with president Song, she feels quite comfortable with him and she can express all of her concerns in order to find some temporary peace of mind. It won’t last for long and she finally explodes in front of Ji Yeong Ra’s toxic words! As for attorney Han, manipulating is his business and business is good! There’s an underground plan going on for the time being and the media response is essential. When the time feels right, the Daesan Group card will be used. Baek Dae Hyeon has found his place in Hansong as promised, but attorney Han, as usual, is not as innocent as he seems to be. Dae Hyeon will be under surveillance based on his time schedule and the papers that will be reaching his office will be specific! Social talking in Japanese between secretaries Yang and Min is essential by now! The discussion continues at the exclusive Hansong lounge where attorney Han pretends to not know anything about the future investigation on Daesan Group, his surprise is immense!
Secretary Min follows Noo Ri’s moves at her current working place, a fast food restaurant, but she doesn’t feel really well since both Noo Ri and her uncle that arrived to get her back home feel like common people living their lives. Just because they’re in a tough economical situation and belonging to the working class doesn’t mean they’re monsters or some sort of terrorists! Attorney Han and madame Choi are having a cup of tea in his study and they feel that everything’s going to be just fine by the time Seo Bom’s parents arrive, convincing/forcing them to pace with the flow is essential. Emotions have no place in the forthcoming meeting, the mask of generosity and rationality will do the talking. And attorney Han finally finds out about Jin Ae ahjumma’s outburst inside their household, as for Jin Young, madame Choi prays that he won’t have their… ravenous DNA. As for attorney Han, he’s pretty certain he doesn’t, after all, little Jin Young has already started looking like part of the high society, his personality proves so, even if he just came to life his life experiences are wealthy! A rich man’s hallucinations and nothing more, yet by the end of the drama he’ll end up bald no matter how hard madame Choi hits his head with the comb!
Nighttime at the household and two men crave the same thing, some time with Jin Young! Attorney Han tries to find the most soundless path to reach his grandson while In Sang is hiding, waiting for the right moment to appear! An overly hilarious scene that reaches completion inside Jin Young’s room where In Sang catches his father playing with his son! Once attorney Han urges In Sang to follow the rules and return back to his room, In Sang has a more powerful weapon by telling his father that the way he holds Jin Young isn’t the proper one!
The housemaid can’t really express her opinion on various events inside the household, but she lets Seo Bom and In Sang know that her parents have been invited! Noo Ri hasn’t been invited and she desperately wants to come as well, it’s In Sang’s part to officially invite her. As for Seo Bom’s parents, they keep wondering what should they bring with them as guests and Jin Ae ahjumma has an idea when it comes to the bellflower root wine! Finding Noo Ri inside the kitchen, she becomes aware that she’s gotten permission from In Sang to be apparent at the meeting, but her mother knows the reasons behind her real intentions. She doesn’t only want to meet her sister, her nephew and her brother-in-law, she also wants to be favored by attorney Han by giving him her video portfolio. It’s something Jin Ae ahjumma’s conscience can’t let happen. As for Hyeong Shik ahjussi, he’s preparing his grandson’s seal, it’s the most humble present he can make, full of heart and through his own work tools.
The preparations inside the household have already began. Seo Bom informs that her parents really like braised hairtail and the housemaid reassures her that she’ll prepare it, something that won’t happen since it won’t be pacing with the overall menu. In Sang and Seo Bom are getting ready too, although Yi Ji considers Seo Bom’s previous outfit much better than the one she’s currently wearing. Secretary Lee’s thoughts on the matter are highly representative of the household’s point of view, a daughter-in-law should dress like one and a daughter should dress like one; and behave like one. Attorney Han’s continuing his investigations in order to bring his own plan to utter perfection, it has to be flawless up to the very end in order to be forcefully accepted in a civilized manner by Seo Bom’s parents. Noo Ri and her urge to find a job will be the battering ram that will be the first strike and it will be a blow asserted in emotion. In Sang and Seo Bom are ready to greet Seo Bom’s parents at the front door and they’re aware that Noo Ri won’t be coming with them. In Sang senses that his parents’ decision to meet Seo Bom’s parents doesn’t pace together with the purest of intentions and he prepares Seo Bom that even if she gets upset in the near future, she shouldn’t get hurt. A beautiful moment as the calm before the storm.
Seo Bom’s family arrives and a short but heartfelt moment takes place. You have to love how both parents hug together Seo Bom and In Sang and stare at both of them with such warmness! The house feels so grandiose to the eyes of Hyeong Shik ahjussi! The chessboard has been set and the proper official greetings from In Sang’s parents and sister take place, it’s about time Seo Bom’s parents witness their grandson while at the same time attorney Han’s plan on finding a proper job for Noo Ri moves on. Jin Young cries while Hyeong Shik ahjussi holds him in his arms, but finds relief on Jin Ae ahjumma’s embrace! It’s a magical moment for both Seo Bom’s parents and the young couple as well. In Sang leads Seo bom’s father to the restroom and afterwards he’s having a conversation with attorney Han. In Sang wants him to apologize to Seo Bom’s parents for the memorandum incident, something that doesn’t pace with attorney Han’s plans of course. Hyeong Shik ahjussi feels lost inside a labyrinth of corridors and he startles madame Choi who screams in fear! Attorney Han laughs at the incident and tries to calm down his wife who’s afraid of being recognized by Hyeong Shik ahjussi since she’s the one who lied at him that this wasn’t In Sang’s house back then, they have to remain strong and force Seo Bom’s parents to accept their shady plan. In Sang and Seo Bom would like to be with both parents at the official meeting, sadly enough, there are only four seats awaiting, all In Sang and Seo Bom have to do for the time being is wait patiently for the outcome of the conversation. A grandiose preparation takes place and the final moves are about to take place as attorney Han and madame Choi’s fake kindness unfolds step by step its dreary wings.
Along with the seal comes a letter from Hyeong Shik ahjussi, his words are saddened, but hold a sense of hope and wishes for the best when it comes to Seo Bom, In Sang and Jin Young. He wants her to forget about the past and follow In Sang’s parents’ lead for a brighter tomorrow when it comes to Jin Young. He’s pretty much aware that it will be tough judging from Seo Bom’s character, all he can do is hope for the best for his daughter. Seo Bom’s writing down Jin Young’s name using her father’s seal while In Sang still considers an apology essential towards Seo Bom’s parents!
Attorney Han’s research on Seo Bom’s family’s background unveils its real face, the strong card reveals itself. He refers to Noo Ri and the working horizon that opens up in front of her. Madame Choi refers to Seo Bom too and their intention to support her all along way in pretty much everything, cracking even more the emotional defensive mechanism of Seo Bom’s parents. It’s the right time to plant the explosives right in the heart of their intentions. In the meantime, the house personnel’s having a conversation about what’s going on in the household whereas In Sang’s aware that it’s not really a discussion between the two sides, but an emotionally forced monologue with his parents taking the initiative. In Sang and Seo Bom move towards the salon where the official meeting takes place. As soon as attorney Han reveals his plans to send Seo Bom’s parents in the countryside everything becomes crystal clear. A job for Noo Ri and an orchard in the countryside for them is the first grandiose attempt in their divide and conquer campaign. Hyeong Shik ahjussi’s words echo full of truth on attorney Han’s intentions, in just a few minutes he lifted them up and then smashed them down.
The fake heaven lies down in pieces in front of the gates of hell and Seo Bom breaks into tears. In Sang can’t hold back, he apologizes on behalf of his family towards Seo Bom’s parents and this time attorney Han won’t hold back, he held back way too much all this time! The almighty household turns into a lunatic zoo and a grotesque circus at the same time all of a sudden as soon as attorney Han throws his meal along with the table towards In Sang! Attorney Han tries to climb over the handrail in order to chase after In Sang whereas Hyeong Shik ahjussi tries to grab him and prevent him from harming In Sang! It’s one of these rare moments when the father wants to kill his son and the father-in-law would do just anything to protect him! In Sang runs in fear, all the ladies at the salon are frightened unable to help and it becomes a demented manly business with all of the men inside the household getting entangled in a united octopus-looking organism! The jeet kune do teacher, butler Park and secretary Kim try to split Hyeong Shik ahjussi and attorney Han and all of them become an octopus ball with many limbs and heads! Now that’s a real battlefield!
Couldn’t think of a more proper ending for the 6th episode, all this fake tranquility was craving for an explosion and my braincells were definitely asking for a railroad laughter, the one with beginning but without end! However, the drama still remains unpredictable, pretty much everything can change anytime! It’s one of these dramas that own the whole package, at least for the time being. And by that i mean representative and vibrant acting, surprising, fast-paced and spot-on scenario, exceptional cinematography, feels & humor, like-minded musical background and a magical prism through which altogether are being filtered as one for our eyes only!
