[Kwon’s Music Corner] DALLE – witch craft pictures. EP Review
01. Witch Craft Pictures
02. Nine Ruins
DALLE’s “witch craft pictures. EP” is their third single to date and it’s a devouring masterpiece that is bound to never leave the corridors of your mind after invading your ears for the first, but oh so lasting, time. It doesn’t matter if it will be your dreadful companion for 8 minutes only, you can always press the repeat button and once you do that there’s no turning back. The downward spiral begins with “Witch Craft Pictures” which is a dream within a nightmare and vice versa. The floating, eerie keyboards and the effects create a surrounding ambiance that veils the composition in a way that doesn’t overshadow the rest of the instruments. On the contrary, it enriches the dreamlike and nightmarish alterations that walk hand in hand with the rhythm section’s more accompanying or intensifying role. The guitars make their appearance only whenever they are needed and they succeed in infusing further tension and distress while Ryo’s caressing clean vocal lines are soaring gently until all hell breaks loose and his multifaceted grunts conceal all tranquility. The journey reaches completion with the instru-mental “Nine Ruins” which moves in noise/dark ambient soundscapes that work as the first composition’s sickening and nocturnal extension and outro. I didn’t expect less from Közi (ex-Malice Mizer, XA-VAT, etc), Ryo (KEEN, HOLLOWGRAM, ex-9GOATS BLACK OUT, etc) who’s been very productive lately and the other members, but this single was so much more than the greatness I was looking forward to. This is what happens when such collaborations decide to show how it’s done and this otherworldly offering preserves the duality of lurking fairy tale and impending horror to the fullest.
