Love Song Episode 1 First Look
So, Love Song (ラヴソング) replaced my very much beloved Itsukoi- I’ve gotta admit, while I was planning to watch it, I have set my expectations really low for some reason, unlike with other drama series this season.
Well, let me tell you that the first episode touched me right here, RIGHT HERE /that’s the heart spot that I’m pointing out right now!
First and foremost let us mention 500 miles, because it’s one of my favorite songs (I have it on my “I miss home ;___;” playlist of mine, which has other gems such as Leaving on a Jetplane, Country Roads Take me Home etc etc…yes, I listen to that playlist on a loop whether I travel to Paris or just half hour away from my home, I’m that dramatic!) and I feel like it captures perfectly the silent despair our main leads are going through.
So, we have Kamishiro (Fukuyama Masaharu is dazzling, such a gent) who apparently gave up pursuing his musical dreams, because the band (he was the guitarist) got disbanded when the singer, Haruno, passed away. (? <—well, something along those lines, it wasn’t much clear) He is a doctor and certain days of a week he completes his hours as a medic in the factory where Sakura (Fujiwara Sakura) works.
Sakura is timid and shy concerning her surroundings, being careful to speak just as little as possible, most notably at work; she’s seen to be comfortable and at ease when she’s at home though (you got Nana + Ultra Street Fighter, all 10 points from me!) where she lives with Mami (Kaho), her orphanage friend that took her under her wing since they were children, and where, another friend from the orphanage, Soraichi, (Suda Masaki) visits quite often.
While both of them have adjusted to the life they’re leading, they are stuck in a confused position, that is emphasized by Kamishiro’s “quitting” outlook of life (going through meaningless relationships, not caring about finding a place of his own) and Sakura’s fear or change. (when Mami tells her that she’s gonna get married)
Their first meeting takes place, after Sakura’s superior who is aware that she has verbal communication issues, “forces” her to undergo a session- Kamishiro picks up that she has a stammering problem but since he’s not specialized on that department, he asks help from Haruno’s sister, Natsuki, who is a speech specialist.
While Sakura relies and trusts Mami and Soraichi a lot (they are both very supportive of her and rush to her side whe needed) it’s not until Kamishiro “prompts” her with his guitar, accompanying her to sing the favorite song of hers (as Natsuki proposed that it could be a starting point of a suitable treatment) that she’s being truthful.
She sings to her heart’s content and has a genuine moment of letting her true feelings come out, something that resonates within Kamishiro, as he’s surprised himself that he enjoyed playing the guitar after so long.
I felt like that moment was so in point, because you don’t even have to be 500 miles away from home, in order not to feel home; Sakura and Kamishiro are literally home, but in a way, they’re not- yet, in that particular moment where they allowed themselves to be honest, everything clicked. Music is the true savior afterall!
I am definitely looking forward to their journey of “walking” 500 miles together and back, until they can rest and feel homelike.
Good acting – check | Good music – check | Plot delivered in a smooth way – check | Mondays getting colorful again – CHEEEECK!
Onwards to episode 2 then!
