Love That Makes You Cry Episode 5

Itsuka Kono Koi wo Omoidashite Kitto Naite Shimau Ep 5 Synopsis : Ren decides to visit his grandfather after finding out he has been sick, while Konatsu reveals the truth to Kihoko about him and Oto.

Recap – Summary :

Ibuki calls Oto to meet- they watch the stars together, and he tells her that having an unrequited love is painful, but if he considered him, he would return her feelings.  Ren is having a bit of trouble at work, and Jouji gets him out of it, while his grandfather is struggling at his hometown due to the cold.

Konatsu tells Haruta that Ren has always been kind and she has loved him since she was a kid, and he promises her that he will find a way to make Ren fall for her.

Ren and Kihoko have an awkward encounter with Oto after they get off the bus, on their way home; in Ren’s apartment, Haruta and Konatasu meet Kihoko, and Konatsu lies to Ren that his grandfather had a small accident and prompts him to go back to his hometown for a while.

In the meantime, Haruta checks Ren’s phone and sees Kihoko’s lengthy text to Ren, and he later tells Konatsu that Ren might not be in love with Kihoko afterall.

The next day, Oto and her friend receive bad news about their work, as their contracts aren’t gonna be renewed, as Ren wants to take time off from work to visit his grandfather, but he’s turned down.

Ren and Oto later meet at Granny Shizue’s place; Shizue asks Ren if he’s gonna visit his Grandpa, but he replies that he can’t afford to lose a day at work these days. After Shizue leaves, Oto tells Ren that he should visit his grandfather; Ren doesn’t want to do it, because he feels that he hasn’t accomplished anything, as he said to his grandpa he would when he set out to travel in Tokyo but Oto disagrees- he saved her, and that is a great accomplishment itself. She mentions she will never bring that up again, and she will keep it locked in her heart, as Ren shares her sentiments while Haruta overhears their conversation.

The next day, Oto learns that her contract was renewed afterall, since Ibuki made a deal with his brother- Ren manages to get two days off with Jouji’s unorthodox help as Kihoko unexpectedly receives a good proposition at work from her new boss.

Oto finds Ibuki washing cars alone as his brother had sent him back to basic training, and she helps him wash all of them clean. After they’re done, Ibuki accompanies Oto to Shizue’s place so they can see the dog, and find Oto and Kihoko there who invite them for dinner. Oto helps her cook, and Kihoko picks up that Ren and Oto had met prior in Hokkaido, but Oto tells her that he was there to return a lost letter from her mom, and nothing else happened.

After the dinner is ready, Haruta and Konatsu soon join- Konatsu figures out that Oto is the one Ren loves, and blurts that out while pointing out the lying and the hypocricy going on; Ren tries to fix the situation by saying he does love Kihoko, but when Konatsu asks him if “she’s the one he loves the best” he’s unable to reply- Oto remains silent, and Kihoko understands what is going on; she leaves the table in tears and later calls for a taxi, leaving Ren behind, while Oto departs with Ibuki.

The next day, Ren is ready to depart for his hometown but before he does, he finds a handmade book outside his apartment, with instructions on how to take care of his grandfather, written by Oto- in the last page, she thanks him for everything and tells him to take care.

Ren meets his Grandpa who is surprised to see him there; Oto confesses to Granny Shizue how she loved Ren, and even if it was for a short time, she will always remember it.

Ren helps around the house and tells his Grandfather about how he couldn’t see him up until now, because he was stuck in a miserable life in Tokyo; lately though, he had come to appreciate it, and this is why he found his way back there too.

5 years later, Oto narrates how she hadn’t seen Ren since that day; she’s now a supervisor in the elderly home, while Ren is seen with a very different attire than usual, along with Haruta ready to get in a taxi and go on with their business.

Reflection Corner :

So, this week it was “Truth that makes You Cry”- after the truth bombs that Konatsu dropped, the food table became the tears-table!

Okay, Konatsu had no business revealing whatever she did, especially in the way she proceeded to do it, but goddamn it, it was about time for some truth to come out. (she should have just said “sorry, JUST THINKING ALOUD! in the end for the epic trolling! ; p)

I kinda felt sad for her, because you could see that when she was poking Oto to declare her love for Ren, in a way she was doing that herself indirectly; it’s ironic that she was basically calling Oto and Ren weaklings, while she never had the courage to tell Ren she loved him, and did it in a roundabout way like this.

I loved Ibuki this episode; it’s nice to see him taking it slow with Oto, letting her know that he’s there without ever forcing his feelings for her. He’s got that wise aura but he can also be playful. Damn, I want him to be happy too in the end, but..this show!

Ren and his grandpa scene was also great; apart from the beautiful scenery, it was a poignant scene, but also had this hope-breeze, as Ren was narrating his escapades in Tokyo, and how it went from being a sad place to a promising one, due to the people he met there.

But Mr Mover, what about 5 yrs later?! Did you become Mr Asshole, clicking your tongue when trains are late because of railway accidents? WHAT ABOUT THE INDESCRIBABLE FEELING you said you felt to Oto, when people shrugged those accidents huh? (I loved that scene in episode 3 btw, it epitomized how Ren & Oto get each other.) Something bad must have happened, right? Oh boy.

Truth hurts, love hurts, everything hurts in this series but I’m so looking forward to see how our heroes fared in this time jump, so onwards to episode 6 then! (Mitsushima will make an appearance next ep too, yaaay!)

(but is the dog the only one that hasn't cried in this series yet?!)

"There's nothing greater in life than loving another; it leads to love for your fellow people, your country..and the whole world."

I'm pretty outgoing from what I've been told; unless, you bad-mouth Ayase. Or Gakky. Or Ueto. Or Tori. Or Masaki. Or Kame. Hmmm, the or-thing is actually endless! You get the gist of it, right? ; p

After asking for some honesty in Ep.4, I didn’t imagine I would be dropped a bomb on like this. Initially, I was like, “Shut the heck up, Konatsu!!” but you’re right. She’s pitiful. She can’t be honest herself but shoving down everyone’s throat with this speech of dishonesty. I agree with you, “Konatsu had no business revealing whatever she did, especially in the way she proceeded to do it” but thank God, the truth is out.

Anyway, I must’ve been blind and deaf. If everyone could see Ren was in love with Oto (I’ll be using her first name now, instead of “Sugihara”), how was it possible that I could not? Seems like I’m trapped in my own preconceptions that Ren is a nice guy but doesn’t really understand the concept of love yet (that’s why when Oto asked him if he loved Kiho, he said “She’s kind and hardworking and I admire her”); that Ren was with Oto time to time also only because he’s nice (not because he’s in love); that “I’m rooting for you, since that day I’ve been rooting for you, so let’s both do our best” (Ep.3) was all because he found her situations/ loneliness/ struggles similar to his. But it could be that he was in love at first sight (or first letter??) with Oto after all, though he couldn’t pinpoint it then. He does care for Kiho, he loves her (“suki”) but she’s not the one he loves THE most. On a side note, Oto carefully thoughtfully wrote notes on lederly treatment like that, how can a guy not fall for a girl that sweet??

Konatsu and Haruta are both a little twisted, they almost are meant for each other. I don’t know what to make out of them. They were just being so nosy and brutally blunt that time I almost felt they were bad guys. I know they’re not. Hang on there, you two.

Ibuki is life, ha 😀 I don’t care how the writer will end his arc in the series, but in my heart I JUST know he’ll lead a happy life 😉 (Don’t die on, me, will you? — I didn’t just jinx it, did I?? Dear Dramalord, please be merciful)

All in all, my fave episode, though my heart broke especially for Kiho (I felt so tired at the end of the episode) but everyone must be so heart broken. *long sigh *

“Truth hurts, love hurts, everything hurts” but I hope the dog doesn’t, so he (or she?) doesn’t have to cry along too T____T

Thanks for the recap 😉 Will read the next one after watching the ep 🙂

Did you watch HSJ Chinen’s Sprout or Sota Fukushi’s Strobe Edge (the latter starring our leading lady too)? I find their characters are similar with Ren in a way that they’re in relationship “not because they’re in love (anymore) but because they can’t break up” (borrowing Haruta’s expression).
In both stories, the girls had to EXPLAIN to the boys why it’s not working anymore and then BREAK UP with them, even though these girls were still in love. I found the girls really brave. In this case, if Konatsu hadn’t dropped the bomb, I wonder how long it would have taken Ren to be honest to Kiho.
I’ll never know if many of guys think that way: that “they’re trying their hardest to keep the ship afloat and to keep their promise” and that it’s the best thing they can do for their (former) loved one, but I personally think they should just toughen up and tell the truth. It’s better (if not BEST) to be heartbroken and get it over with and move on to love someone new than to be in a relationship without love.

    To the five years later-everyone: Please, be happy! 🙂 <3 <3 <3

When I was watching the episode, I was like “Oh crap, she let that one out; oh shit, she let THAT one out too…SHE LETS ALL THE TRUTHS OUT!” Konatsu must have taken the talking-rampage pill that day!

But, that’s just it– what you said about Ren being too nice and pure, and could possibly “love” anyone, is the very thing that made him realize that he has started to fall in love with Oto, because he found himself opening up to someone, instead of being the listener only. (he and Oto have had some truly meaningful conversations together)

I am not gonna spoil you, there are some bumps ahead, but I believe the ending will be happy for everyone- keep watching!
