MARS Episode 1 Review

mars01001

MARS~ただ、君を愛してる~ 01 : The story follows Rei and Kira, who meet for the first time after Rei asks her for directions about a hotel- instead of answering him, she quickly draws him a sketch of the location before she leaves. They meet again at school, as they will be attending the same class.

Rei is an extrovert with a love for motorcycles, popular among his peers while Kira is reticent about her feelings and thoughts, only speaking through her art.

He finds himself drawn to her and protects her from a disgusting teacher harassing her, and she asks him to become her model for drawing after he gains her trust.

Popular playboy meets timid girl; this is the impression the first episode leaves, but it is much more than that; I mean, I hope the drama will depict the beautiful (heartbreakingly beautiful to be precise!) bond between Kira and Rei, as their relationship is quite deep and messy.

The thing I remember about the MARS manga back in my highschool days when I read it, is how extremely hard was to find the volumes; I still think most of them are out of print. It is pretty violent for your typical shojo, and deals with many dark themes.

I am not sure if the series will be as heavy as the manga was or if they will take a lighter turn, so that remains to be seen. It’d be a waste to tone it down (I mean, I get that it needs to be PG but they can work around it) so I’m eager to see how the story will go.

mar02014 mar02015 mar02016 mar02017

Honestly, it was a so-so first episode; things were fastly stacked together, the pace was a bit rushed (it is 20 mins afterall) but I will keep on watching to see how Rei and Kira’s relationship will grow.

Onwards to episode 2 then!

I'm pretty outgoing from what I've been told; unless, you bad-mouth Ayase. Or Gakky. Or Ueto. Or Tori. Or Masaki. Or Kame. Hmmm, the or-thing is actually endless! You get the gist of it, right? ; p

I felt the same way! The sequence of events were a little off and I think they were trying to make it “pretty.” I hope they do shy away from the dark subject matter. It is the first episode, but I don’t feel the characters are coming off as vulnerable, I mean the interaction between the teacher and her was meh. Does that make sense?

Yeah, it did feel that way, maybe it has to do with the fact that they’re limited in time? I feel like we need to wait a couple more epis to see how it’s gonna go though.

        Agreed! 😊

The Taiwanese version is my favorite drama of all time, huhu. I’m not sure what to feel about this! It makes me so emotional, haha.

I haven’t watched it but I’ve heard great things about it; maybe I will give it a shot after the Japanese one ends (and when I find freaking time, lord, there’s only so many series you can fit into a day!)

I know! There’s just too many dramas, it’s crazy. Haha! Hope you can find time to watch the Taiwanese version too 🙂 It’s a bit longer than most JDramas tho!

They always are lol. The last one I watched was Drunken to Love you which did have its faults but I loved the main couple and had some hilarious moments and a great OST. I really want to watch In Time With You when I get some free time since everyone has been giving rave reviews about it.

I’m currently watching the second to the last episode of In Time With You! Haha. I love both lead actors but the story is kind of frustrating for me :))

I’ve watched the Korean version which was utterly boring, so I hope ITMY is way better!

I also urge you to watch it, you should really “make some room” for the T-version. Great performances and one extremely handsome Vic Zhou riding a huge bike (he may look a bit old-fashioned now but his fantastic smile and his shiny hair will make you a fan. If you have already watched Meteor Garden, you’ll know what I mean 😉 )

I agree :-). The OTP was fantastic and I had no idea the story line comes from a manga until I googled it. Usually I try to stay away from “bizarre” Japanese material but MARS convinced me that everything depends on the execution (while Taiwanese dramas tend to drag after episode 5).

Yes! Mars is exceptional tho. But for the past years, I’ve been watching more Jdramas mainly because they don’t drag that much. Haha.

I agree w/ everything said about the TW-drama. <– this is my valuable contribution to this post.

I know this is already months late, but…

THE TAIWANESE VERSION IS MUCH MUCH BETTEEAAHH.

Oops. Sorry for the intense caps lock. :'( I was just so disappointed with this jdrama. I had high HOPES because you know, it’s japanese, it’s their own source material but they just have to chop everything off. My fave manga is not being handled nicely by its own country! :'((

And to make matters worse, I just rewatched the taiwanese version episode 1 and watched the first episode of the japanese version right after. hayyyy~
