Sweet Savage Family ~ Episode 1 Review ~ Dramajjang
“Go when i allow you to, go save the country.”
I simply started watching this drama, there are no specific reasons, just pure curiosity and you know what usually happens to the cat. Sweet Savage Family is a fiendish incantation bound to condemn you to an everlasting chain reaction filled with laughter until your lungs explode like fireworks simply because it’s sweet and savage and kind of remorseless dare i say, but always with love!
I simply couldn’t stop laughing throughout the first episode and even though the hints prove that it’s not going to be all that bright from a point and on, its quirky vibes are bound to keep it vibrant no matter how dark it may get! Everything’s here, intriguing storyline with makjang underlays, representative cinematography, great and even greater acting and a musical sense which paces perfectly well with everything happening on the surface! If you’re not already on board the first episode will definitely convince you, unless it’s not your cup of tea!
Sweet Savage Family’s first episode was an ever-expanding pandemonium of highly humorous torrents accompanying most of the figures’ arch characteristics that will be developing throughout the forthcoming episodes. But let’s talk a bit about some of our main or important secondary characters and their legacy during the first episode!
Who would use an old camera as if it was a machine gun? Tae Soo!
Yoon Tae Soo (Jung Joon Ho)
Jung Joon Ho is more than exceptional as Tae Soo even though it was only the pilot episode of Sweet Savage Family. He’s leading two lives, the first one has to be the life of a gangster under chairman Baek’s command. Every time he calls Tae Soo on the phone he has to pause everything he’d been doing up to that moment in order to get back to “work!” And then comes the traditional fight choreography with its everything-is-a-weapon aesthetic and a rope interrogation at the docks! However, every time he returns back home Tae Soo transforms himself into a happily-married man and loving husband/father far away from his hidden gangster identity! And that’s the awesome part of the story as he tries to hide it from everyone he dearly loves and secretly puts it to use whenever they’re around, but the message is delivered just like when he went to school because his daughter had found herself in trouble.
Kim Eun Ok (Moon Jeong Hee)
She’s astonishing and all over the place. Who can forget the chairman’s 70th birthday celebration and the One Heart ahjumma “band” causing an “artistic” ruckus on stage while Tae Soo was blissfully losing his mind at Eun Ok’s presence? If the chairman’s words are the law, Eun Ok’s opinion is the law to a wider extent! If Tae Soo’s a gangster in the underworld, Eun Ok is a gangster at home and Tae Soo’s definitely obedient to his wife! The moment Eun Ok tells you to watch your steps at night you should definitely keep an eye on each and every direction when she’s not around because chances are high she will be there soon to live up to her warning’s expectations!
Baek Man Bo (Kim Eung Soo)
The ecstatic chairman of Sweet Savage Family who trusts the passionate Tae Soo more than his own son, Gi Bum. Man Bo lives life to the fullest and even though he’s 70 years old his activities vary from old school gangster beating up to celebrations and enthusiasm which makes him look like a young man in his early 20s!
Baek Gi Bum (Jung Woong In)
Unlike Tae Soo who’s more passionate and quirky, Gi Bum is more specific in his own methods. Once a new business plan felt essential he proposed a multi-thematic park consisting of a casino, a hotel, a shopping mall, etc with the help of the Chinese investors. It would be the most stable way out since people would embrace it and everything would seem legal on the surface, but Tae Soo’s movie proposal appeared more intriguing to his father’s eyes and Gi Bum was left behind. His ambitions are already erupting and the sparkles of taking over his father’s empire are already evident!
Oh Joo Ran (Ji Soo Won)
As far as i am concerned, she’s Man Bo’s wife and the one paving the way for the One Heart ahjumma “band!” She’s always enlightening them with her wisdom in gatherings where they discuss about their problems and successes, but most and above all, she assists them with precious information in the way they should help their husbands become more combative in the world of business!
Yoon Sung Min (Lee Min Hyuk)
BTOB‘s Lee Min Hyuk has delivered pretty good first signs on his acting as Sung Min, Tae Soo and Eun Ok’s son! He’s the clever member of the family and he’s being favored by Eun Ok who wants him to maintain his position in grade-ranking at school as the cream of the crop! His enigmatic tranquility and observant stare in everything going on are hilarious!
Yoon Soo Min (Kim Ji Min)
Like father like daughter, she’s the family’s young gangster, but in a righteous way! The way she communicates with Tae Soo is exceptional! They also share the same love for egg tarts with the difference that they won’t always favor Tae Soo’s stomach!
Lee Choon Boon (Oh Mi Yeon)
Choon Boon ahjumma has to be Tae Soo’s clockwork bomb mother concealing all tranquility by reading others’ fortune and causing misfortune to her own son! I think it’s needless to say that her daughter-in-law is boiling even at her presence, but i had to say it anyway since it will cause amusing explosions in the future! And then came that line, honestly, who would ever think of something like that? I couldn’t stop laughing, i reached stratospheric heights and then found myself in free fall until everything turned blank the moment i reached the ground.
Kim Byung Ok appeared as a gangster Tae Soo took care of, but the most pleasant surprise for me was Hong Jin Young‘s performance of Love Battery at Tae Soo’s nightclub! I simply adore her and her voice and i could easily understand why Tae Soo couldn’t let her go so easily, i’d feel the same way! Characters i’m highly looking forward to have to be Lee Do Kyung (Yoo Sun), Gi Bum’s ex-wife, and our lovely Minah from Girl’s Day who’s going to present Baek Hyun Ji, Gi Bum’s daughter!
Man Bo followed Tae Soo’s lead and invested 3 billion won in the Hot Brothers movie, a gangster movie about Daejeon, their region! Tae Soo’s family was ecstatic seeing him on the news and they could easily imagine him at the awards! Of course, he was living the moment to the fullest and the microphone became anew the ketchup bottle which filled his face and a food war erupted! Things were too good to be true and the moment Tae Soo walked in the movie company’s office he found out that nobody was there! The money and the equipment had flown far away and if Tae Soo doesn’t want to feel Man Bo’s wrath he will have to find the movie’s producer, Son Se Woon (Kim Won Hae), and his underlings to make things right!
One thing is for sure, i would like to be a member of this family anytime!
Sweet Savage Family is an aegyo friendly drama, the facial expressions may be exaggerating a bit, but they’re definitely awesome and they enrich even more the drama’s delirious world! I’m all in for Sweet Savage Family and i’m looking forward to the forthcoming romance between Minah and Lee Min Hyuk as opposed to their fathers’ power struggle! Alright, i’m heading towards the second episode!
