Oh My Venus ~ Episode 1 Recap ~ Dramajjang
“All may be equal before the law, but this is not the case in front of the mirror.”
Back in 1999, Kang Joo Eun was Daegu’s Venus and the student male population was losing their minds in her presence while all the other girls were jealous of her charms! Even though she’d have countless chances to pave her own way in the world of beauty, studying hard was her main goal due to her family’s ambitions in order for her to become a successful lawyer!
Im Woo Shik was a member of the national swimming team and he was one of these guys who have a great idea about themselves, but he had also fallen for Joo Eun’s heavenly presence! She had officially become his first love and he was eager to teach her the Seoul dialect!
Fifteen years had passed since then and Joo Eun is a lawyer, but along with her growing knowledge and stress her body paced in a like-minded way and she was overweight. On top of that, she’s got a sense of justice which prevents her from working for clients who have done something wrong and want to emerge victorious no matter what, but law firms don’t need such lawyers and she’s got to persevere if she wants to pay back her loan!
Kim Young Ho, known as John Kim in the US, is a famous personal trainer who works with stardom status celebrities! He found himself in a scandal with Anna Sue and the life she’s leading has caused him to keep his distance from her!
Joo Eun has tried pretty much everything in order to lose weight but nothing seems to have worked and on top of that nothing seems to be flowing well since stress has occupied her daily routine and nightlife, including sleep! The 15th year anniversary with Woo Shik is approaching and she’s not that pleased with the fact that her dimples were lost!
Hyun Woo is Joo Eun’s best friend, a divorcee businesswoman who’s running a restraurant and she’s Joo Eun’s main support even though they have a more direct approach on one another! Everything points towards the direction that Woo Shik will propose to Joo Eun and it’s something she was looking forward to for many years now!
Woo Shik was thankful for her being by his side for the last fifteen years, but after dining together the proposal never took place! She realized that it wasn’t a brand new ring, it was his own couple ring and even though it was filled with feelings back then it’s as empty as his heart for her at the present. Even though she could easily notice that he wanted to tell her to break up she couldn’t afford to listen to everything he had to say and erupted in front of him. After all it wouldn’t be the first time they’d break up within 15 years and she simply couldn’t accept it that easily at that point while she was expecting something else. The ring, the presents and the flowers remained with Woo Shik and Joo Eun was lost in her own saddened thoughts.
Young Ho’s the personal trainer and friend of Korean Snake, Jang Joon Sung, whose manager and friend is Kim Ji Woong! The scandal with Anna Sue rages on and somehow he’ll find a way to handle it in order for his parents not to find out the truth, but he’s more worried about Joon Sung’s match. Joon Sung was an orphan who managed to become a worldwide champion under Young Ho’s guidance.
Joo Eun went to the US on an emergency meeting and she’s still trying to lose weight, but the pills she’s using won’t let her stomach be at ease. In the meantime, Hyun Woo’s ex-husband who’s a producer tries to find as much information as he can about John Kim.
Ji Woong gave up his first class seat for a pregnant woman and he found himself next to Joo Eun who would keep him company for a while! Young Ho was there as well in order to surprise Joon Sung, but Joo Eun’s condition had worsened and he had to reveal himself to help her! Joon Sung along with Eun Ho struggled to move her towards the first class to help her properly and he found out that she was wearing a corset and he couldn’t easily find a vein either!
In the end, he took good care of her and she slept like a baby but once she woke up she was quite lost about what had happened! He urged her to be more careful when it comes to her health and that she should quit tormenting herself with the diet methods she’d been using. Even though their conversation wasn’t the greatest one and since she wanted to repay his kindness, Joo Eun would be the means to Young Ho’s escape without his father’s men finding out!
Eun Joo left the hospital in order to meet Woo Shik and she was waiting for a taxi in the rain. Young Ho noticed her and he wouldn’t leave her like that! Even though she thought that yesterday was the worst day of her life things had started pointing towards the direction that today’s will be that day!
He took her to Woo Shik’s place where she found out that he was happy with another woman, the one she probably met at the restroom before meeting him for their 15th year anniversary. After having even more serious thoughts of losing weight and running away from someone who was after her, Young Ho was there for her anew!
~ Thoughts ~
Alright, let’s be honest here, i started watching this drama simply because of Shin Min Ah and So Ji Sub because i’m going to ship them and i’m going to ship them hard. Oh My Venus started off pretty well, definitely far better than Sassy Go Go and it reached 7.4% during its first episode. Time shall tell on whether it will maintain or even raise its ratings, but i’m quite certain that a big part of the female audience will honor this drama for the oppa parade it has already started nurturing! The good part of the story for me is that i will have only one noona to adore and the ship’s going to be with my hyung, undeniably! However, i will keep an eye on the side-ships that may appear throughout the drama and if they’re worth it i will get on board, parallel universes do exist in dramas!
Setting aside the overweight jokes which couldn’t be missing so easily from a drama like this, i liked the vibes i received from Oh My Venus’ presentation when it comes to Joo Eun’s reality. It reflected how a stressful life may affect one’s body after occupying the mind along with the direct or indirect discrimination which follows. The woman’s facial expressions which were resembling severe indigestion while she was sitting next to Joo Eun inside the plane was just a hint. Even though she was embracing herself, Joo Eun found herself in a maelstrom of trying to lose weight using any possible method around.
Forcing herself to wear a corset in order for her weight not to be that apparent and taking pills which were having their own impact on her health were a just part of the discrimination which was being reflected upon her. Woo Shik’s intentions to break up with her and the sight of him being happy with another woman in her absence even though they hadn’t broken up properly yet executed her on the spot. And that’s when Young Ho, the queen maker, will come into play and i hope that the drama will deal with the overall aspect by presenting it through health’s prism and not only when it comes to beauty which is subjective anyway.
So Ji Sub was hilarious and he gave life to his lines effortlessly through his renowned relaxing style. He’s one of these actors who can walk on both edges while preserving everything the role asks for through tranquility or ever-expanding tension. The undercover celebrity status and the paparazzi and family witch hunt will be hilarious! Shin Min Ah was both quirky and emotionally fortified in Oh My Venus’ first episode and i’m looking forward to her character’s development whereas i have to admit that i could barely recognize Yoo In Young whose presence was astonishing in The Three Musketeers, but here it looks like she’s wearing a wig! The way Shin Min Ah was grabbing So Ji Sub given the occasion was priceless!
Jung Gyu Woon’s role will entrap him in a motive he knows really well i’m afraid, but he’s a wonderful actor and i’m highly anticipating his skills to be carved on the screen! I am also looking forward to witnessing Sung Hoon’s acting through this promising role and the laughter that will come forward through Henry’s quirky character! Kim Jung Tae hasn’t appeared yet, but he was great in Miss Ripley! Ban Hyo Jung and Choi Il Hwa haven’t appeared yet either, but as veteran actors will simply do what they know best, acting and probably shaking our nerve system through their elderly roles! Last but not least, Jo Eun Ji, i dearly loved her in The Greatest Wedding!
Even though i never finished Birth of a Beauty, for some weird reason Oh My Venus seems to be flowing in a like-minded way. Truth be told, we haven’t watched much yet in order to reach assumptions or predict whether the drama’s going to be a pleasant ride or an ongoing eye pleasure, but even though it wasn’t awesome it was definitely an interesting first episode! Nope, the drama doesn’t present anything new and everything will be judged in the details and the way everything will flow alongside the acting. And since it doesn’t present anything new here come the cliches! Young Ho comes from a rich family which is after him since he doesn’t pace with the family’s flow, Joon Sung was an orphan but he became a worldwide champion and the fact that he’s not as young as he used to be along with anything that may be concerning him will come to haunt him at the present.
Joo Eun was a beautiful girl who was charming everyone in her presence, but she became a workaholic woman bound to face everything which derives from her overweight body. Woo Shik is the one who loved Joo Eun but since she’s not pleasing to his eyes anymore he decided to leave her behind and start a new relationship. Ji Woong is the quirky figure, Soo Jin will probably be the second female lead who will try to keep Woo Shik by her side at all costs, especially after Joo Eun’s external change and Young Ho’s father is already searching around for him and the collision is inevitable! Needless to say that Young Ho and Woo Shik will have to fight for Joo Eun’s love and she will probably find herself in a dilemma due to the past she shared with Woo Shik as opposed to the present she may be treasuring with Young Ho. We eat things like that for breakfast in dramaland, the real deal is if Oh My Venus will be able to treat us to a delicious lunch and an even more gracious dinner in order to sleep blithely at the end of the drama!
