Bubblegum Episode #1 Glance/Review [aka radio someone still loves you!]
The story follows two childhood friends, Kim Haeng Ah (Jung Ryeo Won) , a radio station producer and Park Ri Hwan (Lee Dong Wook) a doctor, and dealings with events in their lives and workplaces.
Honestly, I was sold from the very first 5 intro minutes; beautifully shot, great editing, lovely voice over and amazing song choice. I’ve always had a soft spot for radio and how it brings people together, synchronizing thoughts mixed with music and I’m glad it was represented in such a spirited way in the beginning. Whoever came up with the idea of turning on/off the lights to the beat of the music to show the togetherness, my hat’s off to you sir/madame, that was a brilliant scene.
The last radio scene was significant also; the one where Se Yeong (nicknamed “Always Last” lol, I can definitely relate- though I was more like “Always First” on skipping certain classes, I still hold the record in my highschool for most absentee student ever , I sometimes still wonder how I managed to graduate and enter university lol) and Haeng Ah managed to block the highschool girl from falling down the roof through expressing their own shortcomings and how everyone carries some sort of trouble, was greatly done. At the end of the day, some you win, some you lose right?
It’s still early to have half the picture of what the characters will be like, but there was a significant focus on the main duo and their relationship; Ri Hwan is (way x999) overprotective of Haeng Ah; right from making sure she gets her medicine and food, down to picking her stuff from her old boyfriend’s apartment. He is a sincere, good hearted doctor that while his family owns a hospital, he focus on helping the patients his own way.
Haeng Ah on the other hand, likes to deal with problems on her own; she’s a strong character, having lost both her parents in an early age, and is dedicated to her work ; she is a bit intimidated by her “Aunt” (not really her Aunt, but Ri Hwan’s mother that is afraid that Haeng Ah+Ri Hwan’s relationship might be seen by others as “suggestive” or w/e) and while she is great friends with him, she seems to keep him in distance in certain matters.
I suppose the journey of the series will be them realizing what they truly feel for each other (will every episode end like this one, with a segment from their childhood and how it ties to “each right now” situation? Possibly. The little kids were adorable btw!) and we’ll see how the “rival” love interests (played by Lee Jong Hyuk and Park Hee Bon) will affect the story.
All in all, it was more than an okay first episode, with very decent directing, neat cinematography and memorable music. It definitely caught my attention, will be adding it to my weekly watch and coverage list!
