Episode 19 Review: Heard It Through the Grapevine (2015)
Heard It Through the Grapevine’s grandiose course remains above 11% and it seems to have established itself in the first position by now. On the 19th episode it reached 11.1% whereas its Monday-Tuesday rival, Hwajung, fell below 10%, reaching 9.9%. After Blood didn’t manage to achieve the ratings KBS2 was craving for, it was School 2015’s turn to make things brighter and the vibes were pointing towards that direction. However, despite the high anticipation it didn’t enter well the Monday-Tuesday’s battlefield and it seems to be continuing Blood’s course with 3.8%. Hopefully enough its ratings will get better, but for the time being the main battle is between Heard It Through the Grapevine and Hwajung and they have something in common, Joseon in the past and at the present!
Attorney Han is displeased with secretary Yang. When the cat’s away the mice will play, that’s what happened while everyone was on the run with attorney Han’s carelessness and adolescent’s blooming romance. Of course i am referring to In Sang and Seo Bom’s retaliation concerning the Daesan Group case, nobody could have predicted it since nobody was paying attention to them. Attorney Han still can’t believe that he would stand in front of him with In Sang asking such a question, as an addition, the conversation madame Choi eavesdropped has made her collapse and her husband should pay her more attention from now on! In Sang’s words still echo in madame Choi’s chambers and she’s crying a myriad of tears in utter woe!
In Sang and Seo Bom try to talk to madame Choi behind the door, but attorney Han returns back home and he’s out of his mind once again. He considers In Sang a coward from running away from his fist! In Sang’s reply that he didn’t deserve such behavior angers attorney Han and he succumbs to violence once again, but the house personnel and Seo Bom put an end to this conflict before things get more serious. All these loud voices and conflict of opinions make madame Choi collapse even more and she urges them to stop doing this! In Sang begging his mother in front of attorney Han? Hell no! Madame Choi deserving the truth according to In Sang? Hell yeah; but she’s not willing to go against her own demons and the demon her husband is.
In Sang still can’t comprehend this turn of events and the irrationality of his parents through attorney Han’s strictly rational prism. He’s not alone though, Seo Bom stands by his side and supports him, In Sang’s only mistake was that he acted rash without taking into consideration all the parameters before proceeding in a straight forward confrontation with his father. The young couple has already started worrying about getting kicked out of the house since the overall ambiance has surrounded them with its dreadful veil. Attorney Han intends to take extra measures, as for his son’s behavior he considers Seo Bom, Cheol Shik ahjussi and secretary Min responsible. Madame Choi lowers her tone and returns to her “good” old self, leaving behind all the humiliation she had to go through because of her husband. Both of them admitting that they’ve been careless feels essential for their coalition to blossom anew and restrain the revolutionary voices inside and outside of the almighty household.
Seo Bom’s having a conversation with secretary Lee. Seo Bom informs her that she’s on In Sang’s side, but she’d like to hear secretary Lee’s sincere opinion. Seo Bom’s forceful obedience lessons gave birth to obedience just for the sake of it when it comes to secretary Lee and just because she follows her orders it doesn’t mean that she’s on her side. The housemaid’s thoughtful on secretary Lee’s decision to speak honestly to Seo Bom, but her thoughts were quite insightful. Seo Bom must learn when and how to use power. Before possessing this ability, once in a while, it’s not bad disarming a child while you notice her playing with a sword; before she harms herself. In Sang leaves silently, he doesn’t want to see his parents, but he passes by the studying room to see Seo Bom who’s in great need of a heartfelt hug. No human pliers hug this time, both of them are devastated by the overall turn of events, just a humane and affectionate embrace is all that is needed.
Attorney Han tries to get some information from secretary Min, but she tries to keep on the inside everything that should remain a secret and shortly after she meets attorney Yoo. She gives her another chance to set their arch plan in motion once again and secretary Yoo calls Je Hoon over. He’s interested in the Daesan Group case because it was Hansong’s most grandiose achievement and involved all of the firm’s expertise; at least he says so, there could always be another secret reason. He would like a settlement prior to a trial, he doesn’t want to get involved with judges since their background’s stench stinks from kilometers away. As for attorney Yoo, she still hasn’t offered a palpable reason for her participation in the overall case.
Attorney Han’s aware of Cheol Shik ahjussi’s involvement, but it’s something they should keep as a secret from secretary Min, it’s another aspect of his divide and conquer campaign. Secretary Yang tries to make attorney Han’s attention point towards madame Choi in order to make the external appearance of their relationship shine brighter, but he doesn’t want to listen to her lectures. Madame Choi’s mood has reached the bottom, she doesn’t even want to play with Jin Young this time, something which proves that things are serious! In Sang and Seo Bom are having a conversation on the phone and she has already noticed that people have started turning their backs on them, but Hyeon Soo appears. In Sang didn’t want her to reveal everything to Yi Ji and he would like her to stop talking to his sister for the time being. By the time she starts talking about Seo Bom and her background In Sang gets enraged and doesn’t want to talk with her about anything.
The jeet kune do teacher doesn’t appear inside the almighty household for the time being. He hasn’t made up his mind on whether he should hand over his resignation letter or not while at the same time he’s waiting for attorney Han’s decision on whether he’ll keep him or not. However, this doesn’t prevent him from meeting In Sang on the outside world. In Sang has already started thinking of various aspects in case attorney Han kicks them out of the house! The teacher would like In Sang to apologize and ease the tension for the time being, but this time In Sang won’t surrender, attorney Han crossed a line he shouldn’t have, but the teacher’s point of view is insightful. Attorney Han’s a man who crosses seemingly impassable rivers many times a day. Later on, In Sang contacts secretary Min. Secretary Yang tries to unearth information about her and In Sang, but secretary Min sticks to her arch advice, that she shouldn’t dwell in the world of the young couple by helping In Sang. Whether she believed her or not it’s another part of the story, but secretary Min did what she had to; it’s a vicious world!
At the humble house, Hyeong Shik ahjussi and Jin Ae ahjumma are having a conversation regarding Cheol Shik ahjussi and the young couple’s meeting, something just doesn’t feel right, especially when they take into consideration secretary Min’s brother’s friendship to Cheol Shik ahjussi. Shortly after Hyeong Shik ahjussi meets his brother, but he doesn’t receive back answers that would enlighten his brother’s behavior lately. Jin Ae ahjumma is worried about her daughter and talks with her on the phone, but Seo Bom never betrays her internal world when something’s bothering her, she doesn’t want to make her parents worry even more. Once the phone call reaches an end both Seo Bom and Jin Ae ahjumma are lost in their own thoughts. Secretary Yang arrives at the humble house with a one of a kind liquor, but the real reason behind this visit and her seemingly friendly and bright smile is to control the young couple’s reactions from the inside and spread the seeds of fear inside the in-laws’ family.
Seo Bom apologizes to secretary Lee for her previous rushed and overreacting behavior and she accepts Seo Bom’s sincere words. They can start building their relationship on a new basis and secretary Lee gives Seo Bom some crucial hints if they keep behaving this way in front of In Sang’s parents. Separating her from her parents and eventually kicking her out of the house are two possible options. Shortly after secretary Lee tries to ease madame Choi’s tension through massage while Seo Bom gets informed from In Sang that he’s doing his own research. Hyeon Soo notices the certification of contents when it comes to her parents’ divorce suit and things get serious! As for Ji Young Ra, she pays a visit to president Song’s luxurious living room, she needs all the money she invested in cash and the world of president Song starts collapsing! The first negative results of attorney Han, madame Choi and Ji Young Ra’s love triangle have already started making their appearance and president Song can’t even complete a full sentence! As for Ji Young Ra she’s absolute, now that the divorce has come to the surface she wants her money back and she wants them as soon as possible!
Je Hoon informs Noo Ri about everything going on concerning Cheol Shik ahjussi, Seo Bom and In Sang and the tension inside the almighty household, it’s something that cracks her wealthy dreams for the time being and she erupts in front of her parents and Cheol Shik ahjussi. The truth gets revealed step by step and Noo Ri returns back to her room and she doesn’t seem to have learned her lessons. Seeing Seo Bom as the vehicle that will help her accomplish her dreams and considering her arrogant since her actions doesn’t preserve the status Noo Ri wants to achieve is just low, so low. As for Seo Bom’s parents, they are thinking of going to the almighty household and plea for forgiveness, but Cheol Shik ahjussi’s emotional outburst through his own devastation and his love towards the young couple prevents them.
Attorney Han wants to see Seo Bom and In Sang and his attitude is absolute and caustic. They have to beg for forgiveness if they want to remain inside the almighty household while focusing exclusively on their studies. Attorney Han doesn’t receive an answer and madame Choi rises to the surface, since they ignore attorney Han’s decisions they should start getting ready to leave the almighty household as soon as possible, but In Sang’s research has its own impact and states that attorney Han isn’t the owner of the house since it’s legally owned by Han Trust, a management company he established! He never paid for the real estate tax in his own name and since In Sang and Yi Ji are shareholders as well, attorney Han can’t kick them out! Attorney Han’s face was priceless, the whole transformation was hilarious!
Madame Choi decides to take the situation in her own hands and even if she never wanted to behave like attorney Han’s mother, known as queen regnant (queen and regnant, wow, high class pluralism at its finest!), she will have to do so this time in order to preserve the order inside the almighty household. The young couple alongside Yi Ji celebrate this slight victory and orange juice is the trophy, on top of that In Sang informs secretary Min on the latest events! Hyeon Soo’s retaliating in her own way when it comes to her parents’ divorce and she’s partying hard inside her room; i wanted so badly to join the party and awaken the swag monkey within! Seriously, i watched that scene for no reason countless times raising the volume! Eventually Hyeon Soo meets Ji Young Ra and she wants her to end this marriage loudly, but Ji Young Ra doesn’t want her life to be overrun by a scandal! Attorney Han and Hansong will stand by her side, all she wants is a country club and a hotel on Jeju island! Piece of cake for attorney Han who has already started moving on with the procedure aiming for the highest alimony!
Hyeon Soo informs Min Jae on the latest events and In Sang who skipped his class appears to get the college notes. He doesn’t want to talk to Hyeon Soo, but the news that his father will be her mother’s lawyer is a good reason to start talking to her as he gets lost anew on his own thoughts! Jin Ae ahjumma contacts via message the housemaid and asks her if it’s possible to pass by when madame Choi won’t be around. Madame Choi leaves and her attitude towards Seo Bom has already changed negatively. As for attorney Han, he’s facing a major problem, his schedule was messed up and two meetings are happening in the same place at the same time, but the ones he’s about to meet are madame Choi and Ji Young Ra; boom!
Ji Young Ra has already arrived at Hansong’s luxurious lounge and secretary Kim tries to convince her to follow him at the conference room, but the pool attracts her and she starts playing as if tomorrow will never come! Secretary Lee tries to delay madame Choi’s arrival, but it’s too late, not even the arch butler can help while attorney Han’s world collapses! Madame Choi and Ji Young Ra’s meeting after all this time takes place and the signs don’t seem positive, despite the civilized masks! Secretary Yang thinks attorney Han should go upstairs, but he has surrendered, all he wants to know is when it’s all over! It’s time to grow up, attorney Han, don’t you think?
Thoughts: Oh well, what have we got here? Yet another multifaceted episode and pretty much everyone had an equally airing time from leading to secondary figures. The storyline progresses steps before In Sang and Seo Bom’s exam. Many things have happened throughout the episode and they have already started affecting each and every figure, but the outcome of the 19th episode’s interactions will be more apparent in the forthcoming episodes. Attorney Han is still childish and he succumbs to violence once again since the voice of logic always surrenders when he gets invaded by In Sang’s words.
At the same time, a slight part of his “good” old self has already started reappearing, but he needs time. Time to deal with In Sang and Seo Bom, secretary Min, his in-laws and above all, himself. He wants opinions about everything, except for things that affect him directly, like his life as a husband and his duties on that aspect and that’s why anyone could be responsible for pretty much anything, except for himself. He thinks he’s always right and his ego one day will get shattered in a blink of an eye and he won’t be seeing it coming, it will just happen out of nowhere and it will affect his whole existence.
Food; i can digest it, logic and emotion, no.
Madame Choi is deeply wounded by her husband and her son’s words. The truth always hurts more and it’s more than she can bear, that’s why she surrenders to her husband’s motive of strict rationality, the high class way. She’s lost the urge for everything, not even Jin Young can enlighten her devastated world and that’s why she intends to dive in the darkest corners of herself, the ones she never wanted to embrace, but it feels essential for the ideals the almighty couple preserves.
Touch me again and you’ll see what the teacher taught me!
Attorney Han’s mother’s tactics emerge to the surface and madame Choi intends to act like queen regnant used to. We’ve already witnessed the ignoring aspect surrounded by the code of silence, we have yet to find out more of attorney Han’s mother’s methods. It will be more insightful when it comes to attorney Han’s past in the way he was raised in such a restrained environment and we’ll witness madame Choi’s most austere side in full grandeur. Instead of looking straight into the eyes of the problem, the Hans started becoming their good old selves, dealing with peripheral aspects instead of taking care of the problem itself; themselves.
The young couple’s silent empire starts crumbling. In Sang’s rash but justified reactions and Seo Bom’s inability to prevent him from confronting his father and eventually backing him up at that point had the opposite outcome than the desired one. However, this was only the beginning of their righteous journey and it can’t be filled with accomplishments all the time. They always learn from their mistakes and in such circumstances the sooner the hurt arrives the greater the experience they earn and the lesser the consequences will be.
If they could afford that much at this point, they can always try to be one step ahead and be prepared for the worst while aiming for the best. They might have lost allies and a fight, but they haven’t lost the war. They might be breaking apart at times due to the circumstances, but they never forget to return back to reality, always with logic and emotion. Seo Bom redefining her relationship with secretary Lee is to her honor and it can only flow better from now on; mutually. In Sang remaining a restless spirit and gathering information to protect his wife and their child despite the difficulties is a strong card in the young couple’s course.
They are not alone. Cheol Shik, secretary Min, attorney Yoo and Je Hoon are already forging their stronger alliance and alongside Seo Bom and In Sang they can do wonders. As for the almighty couple, madame Choi and Ji Young Ra’s meeting will return the Hans back to the middle ages and it will probably be a chance for the young couple to approach madame Choi anew under new variables and parameters.
