Episode 18 Review: Heard It Through the Grapevine (2015)
Heard It Through the Grapevine didn’t only manage to preserve its first place during its 9th airing week for the second day in a row, but it also reached its highest ratings so far (12.8%) leaving behind Hwajung (10.8%) in the second place with 2% difference! As time passes by and with a different air since it entered its second half, Heard It Through the Grapevine proves that it wasn’t a firework in the world of dramas and after 18 episodes it expands its upward course without fear, but with ultimate passion. The last two episodes were of high importance for the flow of the drama with the 18th one climaxing the 17th episode’s ambiance.
Silence echoes louder than the most fearsome battle cry and attorney Han decides to sleep elsewhere, he grabs the pillows and the duvet, but he doesn’t go far. Madame Choi finally breaks her silence and decides that the time to have a conversation has arrived after he’s been wandering around without reason, but he doesn’t understand anything. That was the first round, the second round takes place at the dining table where madame Choi’s cherishing her noodles, as for attorney Han, if he wants to eat he will have to do it on his own since the housemaid’s not here! It’s a hard task and he skips it, but madame Choi wants him to recite everything he wrote on the gift card. It doesn’t make any sense since madame Choi never did anything that warrants his forgiveness, but once again attorney Han doesn’t understand. It’s either his way or the highway. Madame Choi intends to follow attorney Han’s mother’s tactic when she found out about her husband’s journey with his mistress and the honor of silence starts anew. Ignoring him will be his punishment until he embraces the world of logic once again.
If Jesus was crucified for mankind’s sins, attorney Han got crucified by his own bullshit.
In the meantime, at the humble house the party goes on and truth be told, i would love to be a party crasher! The younger daughter brought a Hansong man, the older one keeps the flame of tradition burning! We’ve got Hyeong Shik’s ahjussi’s singing voice accompanied by his guitar, good company, beer and snacks, what else could one ever ask for? Festivals end as festivals must and the party reaches its end and both couples are outside waiting for Je Hoon’s taxi to arrive and bid him farewell. He’s not a full employee yet, but he intends to give it a shot and find out how the firm works. As for how Hansong never does something illegal it’s something In Sang and Seo Bom should ask attorney Han, the architect of law himself! Noo Ri states that she doesn’t intend to rush things with Je Hoon and goes to sleep because she has to work tomorrow. The young couple urges Jin Ae ahjumma to get some rest since they are the ones to clean the living room.
Ongoing in-law bromance!
Jin Ae ahjumma and Hyeong Shik ahjussi are spending some time with Jin Young, the ever-shining star of their heaven! However, Jin Ae ahjumma’s worries haven’t ceased existing and just like Noo Ri isn’t in a rush, her mother doesn’t bring happiness inside their lives in a fast forward mode either; time shall tell! Noo Ri’s exchanging messages with Je Hoon and even though he has his own goals she indicates that she intends to support him one way or another! As for the young couple, they’re not in a rush either, time shall tell whether they will trust Je Hoon or not, but the truth is only one, they have already started searching for allies in their grandiose attempt! In Sang is always so happy whenever he is at his in-laws’ humble house and this time, with Seo Bom by his side, he finds himself in utter bliss’ embrace, he can’t hide his smile! And since Seo Bom is on the bed and he’s on the floor, it’s a good chance for her to initiate a hug attack! Her concerns about what’s going on inside the almighty household prevent her from proceeding!
Madame Choi tries to find a place to sleep, but attorney Han doesn’t intend to let her rest, he invades each and every room she tries to find shelter and conceals all tranquility like a spoiled child! The attorney within awakens and indicates that he intends to sue her and he will charge everything from the past up to nowadays! Someone’s ego has reached the bottom of the bottomless pit and crawls like an anaconda that just devoured a dinosaur. By the time she tries to sit on the sofa he pulls it backwards and she almost falls on the floor! This was the beginning of the end and a pillow-war begins on madame Choi’s behalf who starts bombarding attorney Han who picks up a table lamp and gets scolded! Say goodbye to drama wrist-grabs, here comes attorney Han’s violent tango shoulder-grab!
The house personnel, the secretaries and the teacher are having an in depth conversation on the almighty household’s matters and the teacher unfolds his own method on preserving the household’s tranquility by advising the young couple to study hard in order to avoid attorney Han’s berserk mode! Everybody approves, including secretary Lee, but he still has a long way to be accepted! The climate changes drastically by the moment the security calls butler Park telling him that something’s wrong inside the almighty household! He had left the cameras running just in case something outrageous happened between madame Choi and attorney Han and his insight was correct! During Joseon era they used swords, nowadays they use golf clubs and before further violence erupts the house personnel, the secretaries and the teacher invade the household! The almighty couple gets startled and madame Choi finds the right chance to disarm attorney Han and grab him from where it hurts the most, his hair! She wants him to surrender in order to let him go and secretary Yang will take care of his confession! The teacher hid himself and recorded the hilarious moment in a video! Madame Choi lets attorney Han go and scolds everyone ordering them to leave immediately. She might have missed her chance to keep everything a secret, but she delivered a powerful lesson to the fearless general in front of everyone, that she’s fear itself! In Sang and Seo Bom bear witness of the moment through the teacher’s video!
The morning arrives and Noo Ri has occupied the bathroom, but Hyeong Shik ahjussi saves In Sang by taking him to the bathhouse! Attorney Han tries to compliment madame Choi by praising her last night’s grandeur by preserving the hierarchy, but at least she should have told everyone that grabbing his hair was an act of affection; okay! The only hierarchy she established was her own, as for him, feeling even a little bit of shame shouldn’t hurt, not that much, but he still doesn’t intend to understand! Seo Bom calls madame Choi and asks if everything is fine and receives a positive answer as her mother-in-law’s having fun inside Jin Young’s room whom she missed so much! And there he is, a video call makes her happiness more vivid as she loses herself inside the screen while attorney Han from his desk boils in his own jealousy unable to see Jin Young! This is the first time Jin Ae ahjumma and madame Choi have such a heartfelt and bright conversation even through a phone call and that’s a good sign nevertheless, even under these odd circumstances! Seo Bom feels at ease and wants to sleep a bit more, but her sleep doesn’t last long since In Sang’s tongue was on an information marathon and betrayed the secret that last night they were out with Cheol Shik ahjussi! The good thing is that he didn’t say anything about the subject of the conversation and that secretary Min was with them. I was so fooled and angered during the kiss scene, i thought In Sang would kiss her on the lips, but at first he goes for the right cheek, skips it and kisses the left one! In the end, since i worship this couple, i couldn’t feel angered anymore since it was such an affectionate moment!
Orchestra, play for me!
Secretary Yang considers it essential to cancel Ji Young Ra’s flight ticket for the journey attorney Han was arranging. He disagrees, but she keeps insisting with the hope that what happened the previous night was a lesson learned, i pretty much doubt it, but eventually he agrees on the cancellation. The right moment for Je Hoon to meet him has arrived and attorney Han asks attorney Yoo to guide the young attorney into the light! Secretary Min appears shortly after to provide all the necessary information Je Hoon requires while attorney Yoo praises her. A coalition is in the making and attorney Yoo reveals to Je Hoon that secretary Min is the secret core of the Daesan labor union, something that intrigues Je Hoon who’s in Hansong for the same case! Noo Ri’s having a conversation with her colleague and even though she likes Je Hoon’s point of view she’s worried about the direction it may lead them, there’s an uncertainty floating in the air based on Je Hoon’s future decisions when it comes to Hansong.
I’m the number one male!
The morning becomes happier for madame Choi by the time Jin Young returns back home and her playful attitude starts glowing! It doesn’t last long since it’s time for the nanny to wrap him and put him on her back! Madame Choi’s worried about the young master’s legs, but the nanny reassures her that everything will be fine and curved legs in the past were due to malnutrition. Seo Bom’s having breakfast and she listens to last night’s spicy details, but the moment arrives for her studying duties to take place. She wonders whether madame Choi could be an ally in their undercover mission now that things are not flowing well with attorney Han, but the teacher pretty much doubts it. Being grateful to her and proud of her, this is it, nothing more, nothing less. As for attorney Han, Seo Bom’s point of view is utterly representative. She might kind of like him as a father-in-law, but as the head of Hansong he’s a pretty frightening person and they still haven’t invested in the documents’ details.
Attorney Han hasn’t surrendered, he sent another message to Ji Young Ra who starts getting tired of the overall situation even though she secretly enjoys it. Hyeon Soo read the message and if her mother doesn’t intend to put an end, she will be the one to end it. Hyeon Soo leaves and Ji Young Ra arranges a meeting with attorney Han. In Sang’s playing basketball with Min Jae who’s relieved to find out that his parents didn’t fight. Well, this isn’t basketball, it’s something between wrestling and neurotic explosions and Hyeon Soo who appears all of a sudden makes things serious. This is attorney Han’s last chance to stop bothering her mother, especially now that chairman Jang is waiting for the right moment to take advantage of Ji Young Ra. I laughed so hard at the message, “please seduce me Young Ra, i want to forget everything”, you have already forgotten everything, attorney Han! As for In Sang, i can’t really say he laughed and it felt like a knife carving inconceivable syllables on the surface of his heart.
In Sang returns devastated back home where he finds Yi Ji who’s not at her finest either for the same reason. By the time madame Choi appears both of them hug her one after the other, as for the reason why, just because. In Sang tries to hide his feelings from Seo Bom and the teacher, but he doesn’t succeed, his liquid eyes and his overburdened face betray him. At the same time, attorney Han and Ji Young Ra’s meeting takes place at Hansong’s luxurious lounge. Ji Young Ra’s thankful for attorney Han’s gift, but she can’t go on like this, Hyeon Soo’s attitude frightens her. It’s not Hyeon Soo that didn’t grow up well, she’s just fine to my eyes, it’s Ji Young Ra’s behavior that is at fault, their children have nothing to do with the chaos they caused. I don’t know if i wanted to laugh or cry when attorney Han proposed Ji Young Ra to discuss the overall subject with Hyeon Soo as two souls who are navigating the rough waters of life and not as mother and daughter. Secretary Yang appeared right on time before i started having thoughts urging me to punch my computer screen and in her own way conveyed the message that he should return back home as early as possible, if not immediately.
And there he is back at the almighty household where madame Choi greets him properly as if nothing happened, as for the rest, they look like as if they had just attended a funeral! Everyone was there, except for In Sang who was burying his own father in the cemetery oh his heart while breaking apart at the young couple’s room. Seo Bom’s afraid he will act rash the moment he will read the documents and that’s when he will need her to stop him. It’s one of the most heartfelt scenes of the episode, full of heart and full of pieces lying on the floor.
Inside the inner chambers attorney Han keeps complimenting madame Choi, but she doesn’t intend to cooperate with anything, he still doesn’t understand! Calling her a hypocrite was the most hypocritical part of the latest episodes. Inside the housemaid and butler Park’s room everyone’s discussing the latest events for one more time under the new parameters! Everyone outside this household thinks of attorney Han and madame Choi as the ideal couple, if only they knew! Secretary Lee leaves because she can’t stand the teacher’s speech on the role model aspects of attorney Han and madame Choi and she’s having a conversation with secretary Yang! Amidst beers they let their disgust flow on the almighty couple’s behavior and specific reactions, they are so tired of the overall situation alongside previous events! I can’t disagree, it’s exhausting, but both of them get paid well and they secretly preserve their own conveniences. Surprise! The teacher appears and secretary Lee acts tough letting him speak through the entryphone! He apologizes for wanting to be a second league attorney Han and promises her that he will try to become a good man from now on! Secretary Lee falls for his words, but secretary Yang tells her to never trust men who never act; first self-slap! He lost an entire apartment; second self-slap! Time to move on; or not?
Seo Bom rushes into the room and wakes up In Sang, the documents have arrived! Secretary Min informs Cheol Shik ahjussi that she just sent the documents and considers it a great opportunity for the young couple to mature faster. The young couple has spread the documents all over the table inside the studying room, but In Sang’s already fed up with this information overload and he doesn’t intend to hold back. At this point, Seo Bom can’t prevent him and informs the teacher of what’s going to happen! In Sang hands over to attorney Han the Daesan labor union case documents and demands some answers whereas Seo Bom tries to make In Sang’s words sound more appealing, but she doesn’t succeed, In Sang’s straight forward. There were people who got injured while working and then they got fired after the accident. However, the dates of the layoffs were changed and appeared as if the workers had been fired before the accident. Attorney Han’s blood pressure steadily rises and avoids to answer whereas In Sang’s ironic yet emotionally fortified and dissatisfied with his own father face strengthens the verbal conflict. In Sang starts talking about the workers that were handicapped and wishes that one day his father will realize his mistakes and will meet them putting a pause on making money.
Madame Choi’s aware of the conversation and takes In Sang and Seo Bom with her for another conversation. She wonders why they were being disrespectful to attorney Han, but Seo Bom points out that they weren’t. In Sang has a different opinion, they are disrespectful because they have to be. He’s definitely out of his mind trying to punch In Sang right in front of everyone, if In Sang hadn’t hated him enough already now attorney Han almost reached the point of no return to his son’s eyes. Now that was a great evasion and escape from the living room alongside Seo Bom! It’s time to talk to the jeet kune do teacher and attorney Han is utterly displeased with the teacher’s work since Seo Bom and In Sang don’t follow his footsteps. This time the teacher doesn’t intend to hold back even at the risk of losing his job. Attorney Han took over South Korea’s legal market with his father’s network and a strictly South Korean know-how. Times have changed and all this tattered network of outdated layers will be of no use at some point. In Sang and Seo Bom are living in a different era and he feels bad for his students for whom he has great affection. If attorney wants them to follow the same old-fashioned pathway he walked upon, then the teacher is of no use inside the almighty household.
Sometimes i drink blood.
Seo Bom lets In Sang know that acting rash has turned madame Choi into their enemy and everything she was forging step by step all this time has collapsed in a blink of an eye. In Sang wonders whether his mother likes living as his father’s wife or not and if she does, that’s why attorney Han doesn’t know his place! However, they’re not alone, madame Choi’s watching from distance and her face alongside her lost stare betray that she listened to everything they said.
Thoughts: Okay, attorney Han is officially a gigantic baby. After the tough years of adolescence he decided to dive even deeper inside the waters of the past and become the evil twin of Jin Young. Everybody knows, except for him. The bubble he found himself in is so vast it reflects back any voice of logic that tries to crack it. No signal filtering, no thought processing, no danger awareness, nothing; his brain refuses pretty much everything. It’s just him, his overgrown ego and his Ji Young Ra obsession. Every time his ideals and authority are being directly threatened he always succumbs to violence as the last resort of power instead of placing down the facts, analyzing them in search for answers through logic and emotion. The almighty household is a country within a country under attorney Han’s authoritarian rule. His old-fashioned beliefs and strict enamoring bonds with the past alongside his deeply restrained childhood and distinctly fed ego hide a fascist behavior under the enlightened nationalist’s and seemingly civilized rationalist’s mask on a quest for more wealth and power. It’s sad but true since he grew up this way, always repressed without questioning, feeling, expressing himself and eventually living. The conversation with the teacher was yet another blow on his wounded but ever-proud ego.
Madame Choi tried to deal with the overall matter in a civilized way until the last man standing realized the truth himself through the impact of his words and actions, but no flower blossoms on barren soil during dry season. Succumbing to violence was a measure of self defense in combination with her shattered nerve system, it’s to her honor that she tries to hide fer own feelings in front of the young couple, Yi Ji and Jin Young by preserving the fake harmony inside the almighty household. She didn’t manage to prevent the rumors from spreading any further, but she tried. At the inner chamber though, whenever she’s alone with attorney Han her attitude remains undeviating as undeviating remains her support towards him when In Sang caused a ruckus in front of the almighty general. She’s a humiliated and betrayed woman and a dedicated wife at the same time. She could had been more straight forward and demand answers face to face in front of her husband since he was unable to understand his wrongdoings, but her old-fashioned beliefs and plurality of masks prevent her from expressing herself. Just like attorney Han was trained to become who he is nowadays, madame Choi was trained to become the woman she is and by attorney Han’s side. Both of them act according to the teachings of their elders and tutors refusing to think on their own on daily life’s matters. Her stare at the end of the drama when she witnessed Seo Bom and In Sang’s conversation possessed a sense of bitterness and it could be an awakening moment for her womanhood. Maybe now, just maybe, Yi Ji and In Sang’s hug wasn’t simply just because but it probably has a different meaning to her eyes.
Seo Bom starts steadily moving to the background as In Sang leaves behind his passive presence and emerges dynamically to the foreground. It’s Seo Bom’s turn to become his support and stand by his side in his darkest hour. It was a multifaceted episode when it comes to In Sang’s character. Lee Joon was highly representative of In Sang’s figure, presenting every single aspect of his internal world through his emotional variations. Throughout the episode we witnessed him happy being around his beloved in-laws at the humble house and we watched his brightest side shining anew inside Seo Bom’s room. But we’ve already seen In Sang devastated in front of Seo Bom’s sadness, frightened before meeting her to his parents and his caring silence when he found out about Noo Ri throughout the drama, but this is the first time we witness him breaking apart for his own reasons.
It’s a heartfelt confession on In Sang’s behalf trying not to hate his father since he was 12, but the toughest part was hating himself as much as he hated his father. All the complaints and all the bitterness that were piling in for years came forth, it’s a side of In Sang we didn’t know, we could imagine it but not to that extent. All of his friends were wasting their fathers’ money without remorse, but In Sang was different and he lives up to the beautiful and more humane world he was keeping encapsulated deep inside all these years. In Sang was born in the wrong family. Attorney Han followed the path that had already been set for him, In Sang never really embraced it and kept living on the inside while taking breathless steps on the pathway his father had paved. Seo Bom helped him bring his internal life out of his shell and breathe.
In the end, a retaliating outburst camouflaged ironically but in a straight forward way as a simple question was inevitable and In Sang was so determined, but also angered and devastated, not even Seo Bom could stop him. Attorney Han is devoid of emotions, In Sang is being overrun by them and Hansong’s bestial face under the civilized mask disgusts him. In Sang may have turned madame Choi into their enemy all of a sudden, but he may have turned her into a stronger ally. It’s always in the way the young couple will interact with madame Choi’s internal world. The forthcoming episodes already raise a more complicated yet even more intriguing aura alongside an immense sense of longing!
The bed is mine!
