Shojo Movies Marathon – The Liar and His Lover (Kanojo wa Uso o Aishisugiteru) 2013 review

326163_カノジョは嘘をB5表_out“The Liar and His Lover ” or  the title I personally prefer “The Girl who loved lies”, is the live action film based on the manga “Kanojo wa Uso o Aishisugiteru” by Kotomi Aoki, published in 2009 by Cheese! magazine.(credits on Asian Wiki for this information)

The title itself makes you interested in the movie. Also the good reviews I’ve read before watching this movie, made me decide that this one was gonna be the next film on my Shojo Manga Movies Marathon.

Truth is only few minutes in the movie and you will feel like it was worth playing this one. The photography and the Tokyo scenery is amazing, given perfectly by the director (Norihiro Koizumi) and the cinematographer (Hiro Yanagida). Also the monologue in the beginning by the main lead Aki (Takeru Sato) puts you in the right mood.

contains spoilers

The story is not an outstanding one, but the characters make it interesting. Aki is an ex member of popular band “Crude Play”, he now focuses writing songs for the band and he still works for the company. But after some events in his life, he feels lonelier than ever he meets high school student Riko Koeda (Sakurako Ohara) and his life changes.

The story involves around lying. Aki lies to Riko when he first meets her about his identity, since his name is well known as a composer. Riko also doesn’t reveal to him she plays music and that she sings, since Aki has said he hates singers. Well it doesn’t take long since the truth is revealed, when Aki meets Riko and her band at his agency. They talk everything out and they don’t get angry at each other. Aki wants to write songs for his girlfriend, but her career seems like a de ja vu of the reasons he quit being in “crude play”. Some misunderstandings happen between Riko and Aki, because of his super idol ex girlfriend Mari (Saki Aibu). To protect Riko from the news the media has on their relationship, Aki decides to reveal his face and pretend he is still a couple with Mari, once again he lies to Riko and breaks up with her. Riko debuts and Aki decides to leave Tokyo. In the end with some help from Shun (Shohei Miura), they meet and we pretty much get a happy ending.

The movie was a good one. It had good scenery, good acting, good music and good development. I didn’t know Takeru Sato before I watched him in this film, but I realized he is a first class actor, he did a great job as Aki. After searching about him, I want to watch more projects of him, I’m ashamed I haven’t heard ofhis name since now. I didn’t know Sakurako Ohara either but she seemed like a perfect Riko. Generally the cast was a good one and the band members were fresh. I’ve only seen two projects of Masataka Kubota playing Shinya Shinohara and omg can they stop making him the bad guy, is it because of his sneaky face? Well in “Summer Nude” he wasn’t totally bad, he is cute anyway.

My only problem about the movie, yeah once again I’m gonna be complaining about the duration and the lack of scenes between the main couple. I have not read the manga, I wish I had or find time to read it. But that was the only point of the film that I felt I didn’t like. The scenes between Riko and Aki were few, I wish we had more time to feel the development between those two. Well the film was focused into the music industry and the romance was shown through that. This issue was saved by the actors since they did a great job and their chemistry was good. Also, I don’t know what happens in the manga, but I would have liked to see a stronger reaction from Riko when she finds out Aki lies, in the beginning on the film and in the end of it.

Maybe I should consider writing a full romance story since I’m always complaining.

I remember giving “The girl who love lies” a 7/10 on my drama list, but now that I think about it I will correct that to 7,5/10 since I enjoyed it a lot and I would gladly watch it again to drool over Tokyo and Takeru Sato : P

p.s I was wondering where I’ve seen Shohei Miura before and I remember he was playing Shuichi Nakatsu in “Hana Kimi” remake. He looks so much alike Ikuta Toma, well casted as Nakatsu hope he has the same career as Ikuta too : D

Aaaaaah. I saw this movie sometimes last year and didn’t get to finish it coz… I reached my destination and forgot to complete it XD Thanks for the review, now I have to hunt for this movie to finish it. If my memory serves it right, it was a very interesting movie but that’s all I can remember lol. I remember she’s an inspiring singer and he got tired with his own work (?)… Something like that? Urgh I better watch it hehehe.

Pretty much, you’ve got the idea of the movie, but you should finish it now that you remembered about it, trust me it’s a good one ; ) When you watch it come back and tell me if you agree with the rest of the review : P

Thanks for the heads up for this. 🙂 Shojo is generally not my thing but I do like to watch a well made youth/growing up story every once in a while. Plus, I seem to have turned into Sato Takeru fan when I wasn’t looking.^^ This film was pretty good and you are right, the cinematography is lovely. I also loved the soundtrack. Have you seen the Side Stories? They broaden nicely our view of most of the characters and even give new insight to certain things. Gosh, did I ever want to punch Takagi so he’d shake till next week. XD Yes, he got results but his methods…

Thanks for reading : ) Takeru Sato is love hehehe No I haven’t seen the Side Stories, where can I find them? Tagaki represents the buisnessman that only cares about work, that’s why his actions didn’t make an impression to me :/

Yup, Takeru sure is love. 😉 There’s something about the boy that just makes him hard to ignore and hard to forget. I’ve so far loved his take on all the characters in dramas/movies I’ve seen. I didn’t really pay attention to Takagi in the movie proper but in the Side Story…

I found the Side Story with subs here.

I’m sorry for replying late but I wanted to watch the side stories, so I could share my opinion. Thank you for helping me find it with subs, I really enjoyed it. It was nice to see the stories of everone, it was like I was watching cute mini dramas stories. I especially enjoyed the one with the classmate, I even shiped her with Shun : P and the guitarist’s and drummer’s stories were good too. I wasn’t surprised with Takagi’s story after all to him music is buisness. I wish there were some more stories about our main couple Aki and Riko but yeah that should have been another movie 😛

I love Takeru Sato , from I saw him Bloody Monday , so I was excited about this movie since he was in it. I liked this movie a lot , I agree about more scenes needed between Riko and Aki, they had very good chemistry. I really like the music in this movie too. I never knew about Side Stories. so I’m going to search out that and watch it.

I love the look of this movie… or shots taken! It brings a lot of emotion. The music too is awesome and I instantly liked the ost.

What I don’t is the movie’s story telling. It lacked a strong foundation, development and build up for me… if this was a series, maybe they could have improved the plot.

I know it could have been better, especially the development between the main couple.

I just watched this movie. The music is so nice xD
I’m going to watch the side story now. But is there only 1 side story?

It’s a very nice movie. If I remember well there is like a second short movie that has different stories.
