Shojo Movies Marathon – The Liar and His Lover (Kanojo wa Uso o Aishisugiteru) 2013 review
“The Liar and His Lover ” or the title I personally prefer “The Girl who loved lies”, is the live action film based on the manga “Kanojo wa Uso o Aishisugiteru” by Kotomi Aoki, published in 2009 by Cheese! magazine.(credits on Asian Wiki for this information)
The title itself makes you interested in the movie. Also the good reviews I’ve read before watching this movie, made me decide that this one was gonna be the next film on my Shojo Manga Movies Marathon.
Truth is only few minutes in the movie and you will feel like it was worth playing this one. The photography and the Tokyo scenery is amazing, given perfectly by the director (Norihiro Koizumi) and the cinematographer (Hiro Yanagida). Also the monologue in the beginning by the main lead Aki (Takeru Sato) puts you in the right mood.
The story is not an outstanding one, but the characters make it interesting. Aki is an ex member of popular band “Crude Play”, he now focuses writing songs for the band and he still works for the company. But after some events in his life, he feels lonelier than ever he meets high school student Riko Koeda (Sakurako Ohara) and his life changes.
The story involves around lying. Aki lies to Riko when he first meets her about his identity, since his name is well known as a composer. Riko also doesn’t reveal to him she plays music and that she sings, since Aki has said he hates singers. Well it doesn’t take long since the truth is revealed, when Aki meets Riko and her band at his agency. They talk everything out and they don’t get angry at each other. Aki wants to write songs for his girlfriend, but her career seems like a de ja vu of the reasons he quit being in “crude play”. Some misunderstandings happen between Riko and Aki, because of his super idol ex girlfriend Mari (Saki Aibu). To protect Riko from the news the media has on their relationship, Aki decides to reveal his face and pretend he is still a couple with Mari, once again he lies to Riko and breaks up with her. Riko debuts and Aki decides to leave Tokyo. In the end with some help from Shun (Shohei Miura), they meet and we pretty much get a happy ending.
The movie was a good one. It had good scenery, good acting, good music and good development. I didn’t know Takeru Sato before I watched him in this film, but I realized he is a first class actor, he did a great job as Aki. After searching about him, I want to watch more projects of him, I’m ashamed I haven’t heard ofhis name since now. I didn’t know Sakurako Ohara either but she seemed like a perfect Riko. Generally the cast was a good one and the band members were fresh. I’ve only seen two projects of Masataka Kubota playing Shinya Shinohara and omg can they stop making him the bad guy, is it because of his sneaky face? Well in “Summer Nude” he wasn’t totally bad, he is cute anyway.
My only problem about the movie, yeah once again I’m gonna be complaining about the duration and the lack of scenes between the main couple. I have not read the manga, I wish I had or find time to read it. But that was the only point of the film that I felt I didn’t like. The scenes between Riko and Aki were few, I wish we had more time to feel the development between those two. Well the film was focused into the music industry and the romance was shown through that. This issue was saved by the actors since they did a great job and their chemistry was good. Also, I don’t know what happens in the manga, but I would have liked to see a stronger reaction from Riko when she finds out Aki lies, in the beginning on the film and in the end of it.
Maybe I should consider writing a full romance story since I’m always complaining.
I remember giving “The girl who love lies” a 7/10 on my drama list, but now that I think about it I will correct that to 7,5/10 since I enjoyed it a lot and I would gladly watch it again to drool over Tokyo and Takeru Sato : P
p.s I was wondering where I’ve seen Shohei Miura before and I remember he was playing Shuichi Nakatsu in “Hana Kimi” remake. He looks so much alike Ikuta Toma, well casted as Nakatsu hope he has the same career as Ikuta too : D
