Cho Yong Pil

Committee for the Sanctification of Cho Yong Pil #1

Cr: Kim Myung-sub & http://www.koreaherald.com/

Cho Yong Pil (조용필) is a living legend and to my ears, through his utterly heartfelt and indescribably emotional interpretation, he’ll always be the ultimate and most distinctive voice of Korea. It was late 70s when he made his first appearance in the vicious world of discography and ever since a vast ocean of emotional tones was born. I wish i knew Korean to dwell inside the deepest core of Cho Yong Pil’s essence and the lyrics (translations are always helpful though) that adorn his musical journeys, but music holds its very own universal language. It was always an expression of feelings; and it will always be. As for Cho Yong Pil, he’s the epitome of heartrending, but also heartwarming, even uplifting, compositions when it comes to the very soul and essence of South Korean music of the latest decades.

Listening to Cho Yong Pil never felt like a background musical adventure, it was always in the foreground as a vibrant and endless journey without destination, simply because it never mattered, it never had one in the first place and it never will. So, here it is, my personal Cho Yong Pil sanctum and the committee for the sanctification of this living musical deity! Of course, i’m exaggerating, it started as a joke while talking to a friend about Cho Yong Pil! However, i’m not exaggerating at all, because Cho Yong Pil’s musical aesthetic is otherworldly as it breathes life from another sphere.

As i musically set sail on scarlet sunsets and turquoise shores, the most appropriate way to announce my heretic attempt is with Cho Yong Pil’s Seoul, Seoul, Seoul. An ode to the capital we all loved through the world of dramas and movies, a composition that always keeps my heart close to my very own imaginary Seoul, the one i crave to meet one day. So, here it is, Seoul, Seoul, Seoul.

And an exceptional live version of 서울 서울 서울 (Seoul, Seoul, Seoul), starting at the second minute of the video, right after the tranquil and beautiful version of 허공 (Air).
