Kara – Secret Love (2014) review / spoiler free
HanaKimi91 here. Exams period is finally, over and I feel so relived : ) Kwon has one more week , so I will be taking over for these days. Hope you won’t be too disappointed : P
So during exam’s period, I would watch one episode before going to sleep, just to relax. Since I haven’t started an ongoing drama from 2015, I decided to watch Kara’s Secret Love drama series, which I wanted to watch a long time now.
Secret Love consists of five episodes, one for each Kara member ( I’m talking about Kara , before Nicole and Jiyoung left the group , so I hope there won’t be any misunderstandings ). Every episode has a different story, like a short movie.
One of the reasons , I wanted to watch these series , except from the fact that I like Kara , was the great cast, actors like Bae Soo bin , Ji Chang Wook , Lee Kwang Soo and more.
I’m gonna write about each episode, from my least favorite to the one I liked the most.
- Nicole’s episode “A seven day summer”
Nicole’s episode wasn’t a bad one, I would say it was just ok nothing much. This story is more involved around family. Nicole is a girl, who comes from The States, since she received a will her father left her. She then meets Lee Kwang Soo and her arrive in Korea becomes adventurous. Lee Kwang Soo was as usual great and Nicole’s acting very decent. But the thing about this episode is that if someone wanted me, to recommend him a short story for his free time, this one would definitely not pop up in my mind.
- Ji young’s episode “Lilac”
Ji young’s episode was a mix of romance and supernatural elements. A young girl submits to the hospital where she meets an older guy. I didn’t mind the fact that Ji young and Bae Soo bin has a big age gap, since their chemistry was good and the acting from both of them was great. I consider/considered Ji young as the best actress in Kara. Yet except those facts, once again this story wasn’t enough for me. Maybe the fact that it was an episode, put limits to the story, which might have been well developed if it was a movie. Also the plot was a bit depressing, one hour wasn’t enough to make the viewer experience the bad feelings and then smoothly move to purification ( I had too much of Greek ancient theater these exams : P ). I would recommend this episode to the ones , who like sad stories.
- Gyruri’s episode “Have you ever had coffee with an angel?”
I was torn weather I should put Gyuri’s or Seungyeon’s story at number three, it was hard to make a decision and my love for Ji Chang Wook wansn’t enough to put this episode at number one. Once again a romantic/supernatural theme. A young girl with a long term crush, make her angel appear after a wish. A story which I would love to see as a drama, with another lead actress. I like Gyuri, but somehow I think her acting is lacking. I’ve seen other projects of her like “nail shop paris”, where I didn’t mind her acting that much since the drama wasn’t a masterpiece, it was just cute series to pass your time. Well for this Secret’s love episode, all I have to say is Ji Chang Wook , I love him not only because he is charisma in a human form but his acting is always great. Whether it’s an mv or a top movie he always tries his best. This story though needed more time like Ji young’s one. But I would say it wouldn’t be bad to check it out.
- Seungyeon’s story “Missing you”
This episode is romance, supernatural, fantasy all in one. A sweet sad story about a couple, Seungyeon and Yeon Woo Jin. Not making an exception Yeon Woo Jin played his part very well, I’ve only seen Ojagkyo family, in which he wasn’t the lead. Well the plot makes you want to know what’s gonna happen next, but it has two weak points, the fantasy elements sometimes are funny and it leaves you with a lot of questions. Also Seungyeon’s acting in this one isn’t very good. I preferred her job in “Her lovely heels”. If it was another actress and some changes to the story, I might have even cried. Why did I put this in number two though? Compared to the other ones it was more complete and left an impression to some people good to others bad, still it is a memorable episode.
p.s for those who are a fan of him, Song Jaerim plays a short part at this episode but I’ve never seen him credited for that.
- Hara’s story “13 Bucket list”
A cute simple romance comedy story, without unnecessary things is the story, that I crown number 1 without a doubt. Hara is a cute awkward girl, that one day her life gets twisted she then meets Kim Young Kwang and the rest, you have to find them out for yourself. I totally recommend this one, it’s easygoing and fun. Maybe I would have liked a little bit more romance since I shipped this couple so much. Not that there wasn’t enough, still they could have made more lovey dovey scenes. I haven’t seen another project from Kim Young Kwang, I’ve been wanting to start “Age ending in Nine boy”, but I’m sure he’ll be great as he was in this episode. Hara worked hard for her part and I think this role suit her the best, there were some parts that were a bit off but in total she did a decent job.
