My Lovely Girl review
I’ve been expecting My lovely girl since August when the cast was announce.I dont know why, but I was very excited to see Rain,Krystal Hoya and L in one drama.
I know a lot of people are against idols acting but I’m ok with it as long as they try their best and have good results.Ending the drama I find myself confused =, of how I feel about it…I didn’t consider watching it, a waste of time, but it definitely didn’t meet my expectations.Watchign it was like a habit, but if someone asked me to recommend him some good drama to watch, “My lovely girl” definitely wouldn’t come in mind. That means it was cute but didn’t impress me.
So 6 / 10 from me.
Time to explain my rating –contains spoilers–
So the drama was basically involving around a Hyun Wook’s(Rain) and Se Na’s (Krystal) love story. If you decide to create a drama exclusively discussing love then you have to make this love epic,in this case that didn’t happen. The story itself begins weird , Hyun Wook was in a car accident where he lost his girlfriend, still not over that he finds, her “abandoned” sister and becomes her protector.Sena teh younger sister, doesn’t know her new crush is her late’s sister ex , falls for him too. Some find the whole story creepy , I found it not a good base to begin with.Anyway the writer’s worked on that and didn’t make it weird to watch.
Then the story involves kpop industry with Shi Woo’s (L) story live, which sometimes I found myself watching the drama just for that.I mean it was the most interesting part.Shi Woo starts with troubles since he is not wanted in his boy band where the leader is Rae Heon (Hoya)(which I will be talking about later, Hoya being a uninteresting supporting role). Then after some drama with the band and another female idol Ra Eum (Hae Ryung), he goes solo and starts working with Krystal.Later he falls for her, becomes the so typical third wheel in kdramas. The the evil with no reason guy, Jae Young leaves Hyun Wook, who has left the Hyun Wook’s company (ANA) with the rest Infinite’s Power members wants to mess with Shi woo and hsi career. That’s his way of destroying ANA and Sena aka Hyun Wook’s life.Jae Young is also in love with Hae Yoon part of the company and long timed friends with Rain , so because he can’t be with her, cause apparently she loves Hyun Wook.He handles it in mature way and tries to destroy everything. That’s where the story, pretty much stops evolving.
I don’t know if it was the acting or the director’s perspective but every time there were confessing their love for each other, it was like someone was confessing their love for fried patetoes. What I love about kdramas is the intense love scenes, especially in the first episodes of every drama.
Not once I saw that on “my lovely girl” and not once I felt emotionally involved, like I have in other dramas. The confessing is done the being together is done and now we move to the, what was supposed to be the climax of the series,Sena finding out Hyun Wook is her sister’s ex.With some help from the bitter unloved friend of Hyun Wook, Sena discovers the truth and yeah nothing pretty much happens.Sena was supposed to get mad, but it was like she was shouting to dalbongie(the dog) for peeing in the house.I don’t blame Krystal for that though her character was too plain to the point it felt boring.Of course Sena, is the good and sweet girl, that suits the description of a kdrama main lead, but nothing more. Also Hyun Wook, ok a good looking ajjushi, it was somehow unrealistic to me how, with all the business and the things he had to take care of, especially his ex girlfriend issues, falls for Sena.Well propably this was his way, out of his complicated life.
The worst part of this is that the two leads in my opinion had zero chemistry and that’s like the most important part, of a kdrama.I found myself thinking Shi woo and Sena had more sparks than the main couple.
About Shi Woo.L’s acting wasn’t that bad, but it was like I was watching L playing himself, not a bad thing.About Hoya, I was pretty disappointed they made him play, an obnoxious supporting role when, he has proved his acting skills more than once and I’m not talking, only about reply 1997, where he was great.Usually roles like that, are played by idols who are just making their dramas debut , don’t know what happened there.
Bestie’s Hae Ryung was making a decent debut as Ra Eum, but after a while we totally lose her and Hoya, like they never existed in the drama.
They were involved mostly in the industry part wich was the thing I give this drama the most credits. They showed in a pretty realistic way how the world of kpop works and the
relationships between members producers and personal matters. But after a while, the focus goes mostly to Sena Shi Woo and the industry , the others somehow become irrelevant.
So while I was reaching the two last episodes , I felt the things, I have read about, in the most harsh reviews.I could really be the person, to defend “My lovely girl” in a conversation , but oh god the last two episodes were a torture.
Things that were repeating themselves with no reason.I mean Sena leaving so that Hyun Wook, will be free from his past, but he becomes a misogynist and then Sena comes back.L is a bit of a creeper he has been waiting for her, the whole time, even hires, as his manager Sena’s friend, this way he would be able to learn for her. Then Hyun Wook meets Sena, at a scene, where we spend like 20 minutes watching them playing “hide and seek” in Hyun Wook’s old apartment.
Sena decides to leave again and then Hyun Wook confesses his love through his radio show, cause he couldn’t do it when he met her, he had to wait for the time she was leaving… and of course Sena happens to listen to the confession, while she is on the street.Finds out about his feelings, somehow they happen to meet and Happy Ending. The last two episodes were too rushed and confusing for me to proccess.Like even the writers gave up on the drama.
Coming to a conclusion I would say that “My lovely Girl” is a what I would say “watchable” drama, but this isn’t enough to survive at a dramaland which is very competitive.
